Supporting School-Refusing Young People: How EHCP Schools Helps Families Rebuild Education Pathways

When a young person enters secondary school, the transition can be overwhelming. For some, the anxiety, sensory overload, social pressures, or unmet special educational needs become so intense that they stop attending altogether. School refusal isn't a choice - it's a sign that something in the system has failed them.

For families, this moment is frightening. Attendance drops. Confidence collapses. The school may insist the child is "fine or "just anxious". Meanwhile parent's are left trying to hold everything together while watching their child shut down.

This is where EHCP Schools can help.

Understanding School Refusal: What's Really Going On

School refusal often emerges in Year 7 or Year 8, when the demands of secondary school increase sharply. Common underlying factors include:

  • Unidentified or unmet SEND needs such as autism, ADHD, sensory processing differences, dyslexia or PDA

  • Mental health challenges including anxiety, depression, trauma or bullying

  • Inadequate support or a school environment that simply isn't suitable

  • A mismatch between the young persons needs and the mainstream setting

School refusal is not a behavioural issue. It is a communication of distress. And it requires a structured, compassionate, legally-informed response.

How I Support Families Over a Full Year

My consultancy provides a year-long, hands-on service designed to stabilised the situation, secure the right assessments, and achieve a legally enforceable Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) that leads to specialist education.

  1. Initial Assessment & Strategy

I begin by understanding the young person's history, needs, strengths, and current barriers. Families receive a clear plan outlining:

  • What the school should be doing

  • What evidence is needed

  • How to begin the EHCP process

  • Reassurance to parent's that they are not alone

This early clarity is often the first moment parents feel they can breath again.

  1. Managing the school relationship

Schools can be defensive, overwhelmed, or simply unaware of their legal duties. I help families:

  • Navigate difficult meetings

  • Work with schools to gather evidence and support

  • Ensure the school provides interim support

  • Document everything

This prevents families from being blamed and ensure the young person's needs are recognised.

  1. Building the evidence base

A strong EHCP replies on robust evidence. Over the year I help families secure:

  • Specialist assessments

  • CAMHS or private clinical input

  • Occupational Therapy, Speech & Language Therapy and Educational Psychology assessments and full reports

  • Attendance records, behaviour logs and safeguarding notes

This transforms the narrative from "school refusal" to "unmet needs requiring specialist provision".

  1. Applying for and securing the EHCP

I guide families through every stage:

  • Submit the request

  • Empowering parents to respond to the Local Authority, drafting emails, managing timelines

  • Helping prepare for assessments

  • Reviewing reports

  • Ensuring B, F & I are accurate

  • Challenging poor draft EHCP's

  • Preparing for Mediation or Appeals if needed

My goal is always the same: a legally sound EHCP that cannot be ignored.

  1. Finding the right specialist educational setting

During the EHC Needs Assessment process I support families to identify and secure:

  • Specialist schools

  • ASD specific provision

  • Therapeutic environments

  • Alternative education pathways

  • Education other than in school (EOTIS)

The aim is not just placement - it's the right placement

  1. Rebuilding confidence and future pathways

With the correct provision young people begin to:

  • Re-engage

  • Regain confidence

  • Feel understood

  • Access learning in a way that works for them

  • Have a peer group and new friendships

Families often tell me this is the moment they finally get their child back.

A year of structure support can completely change a young person's trajectory. Instead of spiralling into long-term non-attendance, isolation and mental health decline, they can move towards stability, specialist education and a future that feels possible.

Parent's don't have to fight alone. With expert guidance the system becomes navigable. A huge part of my role is to support parents using my personal experience, providing empathy and empowerment. Knowing you are not alone, and what you are going through is normal, is a huge emotional support at a time when parents feel out of their depth. EHCP Schools is more than just a consultancy, we’re your dedicated partner, walking with you every step of the journey.
